DR SHAMEER MEHTA

Dr. Mehta is a highly skilled and experienced gastroenterologist. He is one of only a few consultants who has been appointed to two London teaching hospitals: University College London Hospital and, currently, The Royal London Hospital (Barts Health NHS Trust) where he is the Clinical Lead for Nutrition. His private practice is based at The London Digestive Centre and The Princess Grace Hospital, as well as Cleveland Clinic London where is also the Clinical Lead for Nutrition. He maintains a strong interest in research and education, both nationally and internationally and remains an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London. He is also a passionate advocate for shared decision making between patient and physician and believes a healthy gut is vital for overall well-being.

As a consultant gastroenterologist at UCLH and The Royal London Hospital, Dr. Mehta has wide-ranging expertise in gut disorders. In addition to the conditions listed above, Dr. Mehta also cares for patients with coeliac disease, stomach ulcers and anaemia, amongst other conditions. He not only looks after his own caseload of patients but whilst leading the multidisciplinary nutrition team at Barts Health NHS Trust, he provides specialist input to a variety of patients under other medical teams. Moreover, he is:

• an accredited endoscopist including colonoscopy and polypectomy
• skilled in endoscopic placement of artificial feeding tubes
• an accredited trainer for the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism
• medical advisor to the Pelvic Radiation Disease Association
• clinical lead of the UCLH Nutrition and Hydration Strategy Group 2015-2021
• an educator, e.g. UCL MSc in Clinical Nutrition and Public Health
• an organiser of patient engagement workshops

Dr. Mehta qualified in London in 2003, having also obtained a BSc with Honours in Molecular Medicine from the University of London. He underwent an advanced training programme in the management of patients with complex inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis) and intestinal failure at multiple London teaching hospitals before completing a joint fellowship in translational science research at the Blizard Institute, London and medical education at Queen Mary University of London. During this time, he became a fellow of the Higher Education Academy in recognition of his postgraduate teaching work. His MD investigated the development of intestinal fibrosis in patients with Crohn’s disease. He was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist at University College London Hospital and Honorary Senior Lecturer at University College London in 2015. He moved to The Royal London Hospital, Barts Health NHS Trust, in 2021 to take over as Clinical Lead for Nutrition and further develop his interest in inflammatory bowel disease. He was also appointed as Consultant and Nutrition Lead at Cleveland Clinic London upon opening of the new 186-bed hospital in Central London. He remains an Honorary Associate Professor at University College London.

Dr. Mehta has a track record of delivering high-quality research outcomes in a range of settings. Examples of his research activity include:

• completing his MD(Res) thesis at the University of London which progressed the understanding of the development of intestinal fibrosis in Crohn’s disease
• chief investigator of a UK-wide study of intestinal failure associated liver disease (a leading cause of patients requiring intestinal transplant)
• one of the largest published series of patients suffering with pelvic radiation disease, describing both clinical features and outcomes
• heavy involvement with multiple clinical trials for new therapies for inflammatory bowel disease

Dr. Mehta has given multiple national and international presentations and continues to dedicate time to research as well as his educational and clinical practice – he believes keeping up to date in this way only serves to make him a better physician for his patients.
